Observation Points For LJ/TJ Practice
One of the best advantage points to watch your LJ/TJ athlete’s run-up during practice is roughly 60’ down from the take-off board and far enough back from the runway to see the entire run. This creates almost a triangle affect of vision. This is where most experienced coaches will watch there athlete during practice and meets. This viewpoint gives you the most visibility to see the athlete’s acceleration pattern, middle transition phases, and the set-up and take-off.
The hardest information to gather from this viewpoint is where the athlete takes off in relationship to the board. You have three standard options in today’s world:
1) Move yourself to stand in front of the take-off board so you yourself can see the take-off. This now takes you away from the most advantageous viewpoint and limits the amount of feedback you can give your athlete.
2) Have another athlete stand at the board and watch the take-off of the athlete and give you feedback. We’ve all seen the take-off of one of our athletes and swore they were only 2” from fouling, only to have an official tell you they fouled. That same situation arises at practice when you think your athlete was securely on the board only to have the observing athlete tell you the jumper was 6” from touching the board.
3) Not have anyone watch the take-off and simply guess as to where your jumper was on the board. We can all see the disadvantages to this option.
Today we discuss another option that has none of the disadvantages these three options present and all the advantages to make your practice the most efficient and practical. The Coach’s Eye Plus is designed to catch your jumpers take-off and tell you how far away from fouling they are (or how much they fouled by) while also allowing you to do it from any viewpoint you decide.
“I have found the Coach’s Eye invaluable in practice situations when it was just myself with the athlete. I use a mid-mark and it is difficult for me to watch both the mid-mark and the takeoff. The Coach’s Eye permits me to concentrate on the run and provides accurate feedback as to the placement of the take-off foot whether it be at the take-off or mid-mark,” Cliff Rovelto, Kansas State University, Head Track and Field Coach.
No longer does the coach have to stand at the board (or have another athlete do it) and miss the rest of the run-up. With the Coach’s Eye Plus, you lay down two tracks of lasers next to your take-off board and simply turn them on (along with your remote control).
Then as you watch your jumper come down the runway, after they take-off you simply look at the remote control and it tells you where your jumper took off. You simply hit the reset button and you are ready for your next athlete.
The Coach’s Eye is versatile enough to also be used as a mid-mark checkpoint as well as to be used in high jump practice.
“I have used the Coach’s Eye for the past year. As one knows coaching a field event is very time intensive, especially if you have a number of jumpers. The Coach’s Eye has allowed me the freedom of checking the scratch line without moving from my vantage point of checking the run mid way through the jump. The other issue is that the exact foul or foot placement can be determined at once and a picture is worth more than any explanation. The visual that the athletes receive from seeing their exact placement accelerates teaching tremendously. I am now using two Coach’s Eyes at once to pick up a mid mark. My teaching has greatly been enhanced with the usage of the Coach’s Eyes. If you want to save time and give specific feed back, the Coach’s Eye is the way to go,” R. Craig Poole, Brigham Young University, Head Women’s Track and Field Coach.
I think this simple tool will enhance your jumper’s practices tremendously. More feedback for your athlete will help them understand the most important aspect of the jump—the runway. Now you can concentrate on that important aspect and still know the end result, the take-off point.

Mike Cunningham
Since the beginning of
freshman year of high school, track and field has been an important aspect of
my life. I ran four years of track at Eufaula High School in Alabama. I was a
hurdler and mid-distance runner. In small-town Alabama that means you run
everything, every meet. My meet schedule would look something like this: run
the 4x800m, 110mHH, 800m, 300mIH, 1600m, and 4x400m. Needless to say I was
always tired and never very good. I do still own a share of the 4x800m school
record though!
I never ran in college, but instead started coaching after my freshman year. I began at DeLaSalle High School in Chicago as the assistant coach in charge of sprints and hurdles. After one year, I became the head coach in charge of everything. I used that experience as a springboard to do an undergraduate coaching position at Troy State University back in Alabama. At TSU, I coached the hurdles and assisted with sprints. After graduation, I became the head coach of Neosho County Community College in Kansas. I parlayed that into a women’s assistant coaching position at Ball State University in Indiana and then an assistant coaching position at Mississippi State University.
I enjoyed a fairly successful coaching career with several All-Americans in all the sprint events and a few in the jumping events. For a few years I was the junior elite high hurdle camp coach out at US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cal. In between my coaching career and my current sales career, I spent a year in Las Vegas as a professional poker player. I am now a technical sales representative with Gill Athletics specializing in collegiate sales. I enjoy speaking with and helping out coaches in all the NCAA/NAIA/JUCO divisions. I still teach frequently in Coaches Education Level I classes (I’m a level II coach in Sprints, Jumps and Combined Events) as well as speak at several coach’s clinics throughout the country.
1) What brought you to Gill?
I was tired of playing poker professionally and missed the sport of track and field. I looked to get back into coaching but didn’t find any positions that were the right fit at the time. I have known MidWest Regional Manager Karl Geissler for the better part of 10 years and he told me about this opportunity at Gill. I decided to look into it and here I am today.
2) What is your favorite part of working for Gill?
The main focus of my coaching career was being able to help student-athletes out. Now I get to take that experience and indirectly help the student-athlete out by helping the track and field coach with his/her equipment needs. I am especially proud to help provide track and field equipment from the world’s #1 manufacturer to former peers and look forward to meeting new coaches everyday.
3) How do you use your past coaching experiences (and/or competing experiences) to help Gill customers?
Most coaches that I talk to on a daily basis are in the collegiate arena. My eight years coaching college student-athletes help me to relate to the college coach now. I understand that they have schedules, practices, budgets, recruiting, parents, fundraisers, more recruiting, etc to deal with on a daily basis. Coaches want their equipment needs and issues to be taken care of quickly and effortlessly. I fill that need with quick service, great price and the best products.
4) How does your specialty pertain to helping Gill customers?
As the former junior elite high hurdle camp coach, I am able to speak with knowledge on which hurdles best compliments a coach’s specific facility. We have eight different choices and it can be overwhelming to a track coach who is stressing out over his budget with his athletic director on his/her back. I used Gill equipment my entire coaching career so I’m also able to give feedback to coaches who are looking for real-world application of such items as the Speed Trap, PowerMax items and starting blocks.
