VOC Testing: What is a VOC? A VOC or volatile organic compound is an emitted gas that comes from some solids and liquids. Where do VOC’s come from? VOC’s come from a variety of products including things like:
VOC’s are found more readily indoors than out and at a higher concentrations. This is why there are guidelines set up by the USGBC to maintain safe environment in schools and buildings. Health Effects. There are some negative health effects associated with exposure to VOC’s.The severity and effect of these chemicals varies greatly depending on amount of time exposed and the level of exposure. Porter uses safe practices like powder coating, which give off nearly ZERO VOC’s, instead of painting. This makes Porter’s powder coated products safe for use anywhere, especially in schools. LEED and VOC’s The US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design aims at creating sustainable and healthy buildings. Children are more sensitive to VOC’s and can feel the health effects more readily, which is why LEED for schools set up guidelines to protect them. LEED credit EQ 4 in the LEED for new construction and LEED for schools awards credits for using low emitting materials and products. These low emitting materials guidelines encourage the use of documents and tested safe products. Currently, Porter is investigating getting many products tested and certified to help you in your LEED certification. Check back soon for updates and results!
